Gateway Elementary Butterfly Haven
We are excited to announce that the first Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program at Gateway Elementary has been completed with great success! The students did an amazing job of applying the information they learned from the program to design and plant the “Gateway Elementary Butterfly Haven” right outside the school’s front doors. Some of the activities they completed include the following:
· Analyzed the soil texture
· Evaluated the ability of the site to provide for the needs of plants and wildlife.
· Determined the spacing requirements when planting seeds and transplants.
· Researched specific plant material that specific wildlife may eat.
· Studied the importance of maintaining a supply of water when attracting wildlife to a habitat.
· Studied plant classifications: Annuals, Biennials or Perennials.
· Studied the importance of shelter for various forms of wildlife.
· Studied the life cycles of the butterfly.
· Established safety practices for the garden learning area.
· Designed a butterfly garden.
· Planted a butterfly garden.
This program would not have been successful without the strong commitment of our Habitat Team and Volunteers.
Thank You!
