Students recognize and use the visual arts as a form of communication
Create works of art commemorating personal events
Explain how a work of art makes them feel
Make purposeful marks which are meaningful and expressive
Understand the dynamic connections between visual and literary arts
Identify and interpret visual images, themes, and ideas in works of art
Select and use visual images, themes, and ideas to communicate meaning
Students know and apply elements of art, principles of design, and sensory and expressive features of visual arts
Identify elements of art and principles of design in works of art (Elements: line, shape, form, texture, color, space, and value/ Principles: rhythm, unity, variety, emphasis, contrast, pattern, balance, and movement)
Investigate and describe the sensory and expressive features of works of art (use the 5 senses and human emotion to understand art)
Apply the use of elements of art and principles of design in the creation of personal works of art
Students know and apply visual arts materials, tools, techniques, and processes
Identify and describe different materials, tools, techniques, and processes used in works of art
Construct a variety of three-dimensional forms
Experience a variety of techniques and processes, to include: handbuilding with clay, printmaking, weaving, painting, drawing, sculpting, collage and assemblage, and graphic arts
Be responsible for the safe and appropriate use of tools and materials
Explore the use and qualities of clay, paints, papers, textiles, crayon, markers, colored pencils, ink, metal, pastels, digital images, adhesives, found objects, and organic materials
Students relate the visual arts to various historical and cultural traditions
Identify works of art as belonging to various cultures, times, and themes
Use historical and cultural themes as a basis for creating art
Appreciate common threads between cultures and generations that reveal our shared human community
Distinguish the roles of artists in communities
Students analyze and evaluate the characteristics, merits, and meaning of works of art
Share personal opinions about what art is and what purpose art serves
Use selected criteria as the basis of making judgments about works of art
Analyze and interpret possible meanings of works of art
Students know and apply connections between the visual arts and other disciplines
Experience connections between art, music, dance, drama, and creative writing
Synthesize knowledge gained from the various perspectives inherent to other content areas
Create works of art to extend learning and demonstrate knowledge in a variety of content areas
Recognize possibilities for art in the world of work and life
Students develop the practices that nurture the creative process
